Red Sea 0511

This photography workshop was led by noted underwater photographer Dr. Alex Mustard and arranged to spend the first half diving the S.S. Thistlegorm, probably the most famous wreck in the northern Red Sea. In October of 1941, she was waiting to pass through the Suez Canal with her load of supplies for the British North African campaign when she was attacked and sunk by German bombers. The holds are packed with a variety of trucks and row upon row of motorcycles as well as airplane parts, guns, and other supplies. We had the chance to dive the wreck over 3 days, allowing us to find the most photogenic artifacts as well as try several interesting lighting techniques. The balance of the trip was spent on the lush reefs in and around Egypt's Ras Mohammed National Park and the Straits of Tiran. Thanks to Alex, the Whirlwind crew, and all the other participants for a fantastic trip!
