Alor Komodo 1111 : A 26 day odyssey aboard the luxury liveaboard, Damai 2 with a small group of Wetpixel photographers. Great boat, great crew, great food and best of all, great people! The trip started off with a bang with a side trip to the active Komba volcano and we were blessed with an outpouring of fantastic critters from there on out. We saw 18 different Rhinopia (a rare kind of scorpionfish) in the first 10 days (previously, I had seen 2 in my whole life), well over 100 different nudibranch species, mantas, and my new favorites, ladybug amphipods which are no bigger than fleas. I even got attacked by a Komodo dragon! This gallery is a bit longer than usual given the length of the trip and the amazing photo opportunities...

Red Sea 0511 : This photography workshop was led by noted underwater photographer Dr. Alex Mustard and arranged to spend the first half diving the S.S. Thistlegorm, probably the most famous wreck in the northern Red Sea. In October of 1941, she was waiting to pass through the Suez Canal with her load of supplies for the British North African campaign when she was attacked and sunk by German bombers. The holds are packed with a variety of trucks and row upon row of motorcycles as well as airplane parts, guns, and other supplies. We had the chance to dive the wreck over 3 days, allowing us to find the most photogenic artifacts as well as try several interesting lighting techniques. The balance of the trip was spent on the lush reefs in and around Egypt's Ras Mohammed National Park and the Straits of Tiran. Thanks to Alex, the Whirlwind crew, and all the other participants for a fantastic trip!

Oceanic White Tips 0511 : In the southern Bahamas aboard the Shearwater out of W. Palm Beach, FL. First stop, Pig Island, where the locals swim out to the boat to meet you and beg for goodies. Then on to the sharks, where we had up to 10 circling at a time. As open water hunters, these sharks are very inquisitive and would often come right up to you, even bumping into your camera. This is open/blue water diving with no reef or bottom in sight. The early morning seas were so glassy, I had the chance to get a little arty with the waves and ripples. For the return, we stopped off to say hi to the pigs again and then had a great interaction with a small pod of dolphins. Back in W. Palm Beach I spent the day at a local wildlife area - couldn't leave Florida without a cool alligator picture!

Truk Lagoon 0211 : Truk (now Chuuk) in Micronesia was Japan's main forward naval base in the Pacific, coordinating all their major campaigns including the attack on Pearl Harbor. In February of 1944, the U.S. launched a major air assault on the base called "Operation Hailstone". The Japanese had spotted one of the reconnaissance planes several days before the attack and were able to move almost all their warships out, however over the course of two days, the U.S. sunk almost 60 ships in the shallow lagoon. These were mostly merchant ships and freighters, some in for repair but others still carrying equipment and materiel for Japan's war effort. There are tanks, planes, trucks, replacement parts, artillery shells, bullets, and even torpedoes still on board the ships, as well as numerous artifacts of a more personal nature such as china, shoes, medical kits, and lots of beer and sake bottles. There are still some human remains as well. Special thanks to my dive buddy Ken for his awesome modeling - as well as Andrea who just always seemed to be in the right place.
